Father and Two Daughters Shot in Violent Bridle Path Home Invasion as Police Hunt Three Suspects

Father and Two Daughters Shot in Violent Bridle Path Home Invasion as Police Hunt Three Suspects

A family of four was attacked inside their Toronto mansion, and police now believe one of the alleged intruders was accidentally shot by his own accomplice.

A violent home invasion in Toronto's exclusive Bridle Path neighbourhood has left a prominent real estate executive and his family recovering from serious injuries, while police search for three suspects believed to be armed and dangerous.

The attack happened around 3:40 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, at a home on Hyde Park Circle, near Bayview Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East.

According to Toronto Police, three masked men armed with firearms and a hammer forced their way into the residence through a rear entrance. They made their way upstairs, where they confronted the family and demanded valuables.

Inside were 75-year-old David Morton, CEO of Toronto real estate company THE MAC Group, his 64-year-old wife, Doriana Zohil-Morton, and their two adult daughters, aged 26 and 28.

A struggle broke out, and multiple shots were fired.

Morton and both daughters suffered gunshot wounds, while Morton and his wife were also struck with a hammer. In a statement released the following day, Morton said all four family members had been attacked with the weapon.

All four were rushed to hospital. Two initially suffered life-threatening injuries. By Friday, Doriana had been discharged, while Morton and his daughters remained hospitalized.

In a statement on behalf of his family, Morton described the ordeal as a terrifying and life-threatening experience, saying the family was traumatized by the violence.

The suspects fled in a dark-coloured SUV before police arrived. Investigators have not confirmed whether any valuables were stolen.

A Surprising Twist in the Investigation

The case took an unexpected turn when police identified one of the alleged intruders as 23-year-old Toronto resident Daijohn Richards.

Shortly after the attack, police were notified that a man with a gunshot wound had arrived at St. Joseph's Health Centre. Investigators now believe that man was Richards, who may have been accidentally shot in the shoulder by one of his accomplices during the struggle inside the house.

But Richards had already been discharged from the hospital on Friday afternoon, before investigators established his alleged connection to the home invasion.

On Saturday, October 31, Toronto Police released his photograph and issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant.

Richards is wanted on multiple charges, including four counts of robbery with a firearm, four counts of discharging a firearm with intent to wound, three counts of aggravated assault, and breaking and entering.

The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.

The two other suspects have not yet been identified.

A Growing Concern Across Toronto

The attack has shaken the Bridle Path, a neighbourhood known for its multimillion-dollar mansions, celebrity residents and extensive private security.

Investigators say the home may have been chosen because of its location in the affluent neighbourhood, although the motive remains under investigation.

And the incident comes amid a troubling rise in home invasions across Toronto.

Police say 119 home invasions have been reported in the city so far this year, an increase of more than 35% compared with the same period in 2025.

Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the attack, saying residents should be able to feel safe in their own homes.

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw has pledged that investigators will continue pursuing those responsible.

As of Monday, November 2, Richards and the two other suspects remain wanted. Police are urging anyone with information or relevant surveillance footage to contact investigators.

For the Morton family, what began as an ordinary night at home turned into an ordeal that has left three family members recovering from gunshot wounds and an entire neighbourhood shaken.
