Senior Iranian Regime Official Deported From Canada

Canada has deported Syed Salman Samani, Iran’s former deputy interior minister and government spokesperson, after the Federal Court rejected his last-minute appeal.

Samani served the Islamic Republic from 2007–2021. The court noted that his ministry oversaw police forces responsible for widespread killings and human-rights abuses, and that he publicly defended the ministry during Iran’s deadly 2019 “Bloody November” crackdown.

He is just the second Iranian regime official deported under Canadian measures targeting senior members of the regime.

Meanwhile, CBSA has launched 181 investigations into suspected senior Iranian regime officials in Canada, with 55 still under investigation.

Former Toronto MP Kevin Vuong, referencing estimates that upwards of 700 Iranian regime-linked individuals and entities have been identified in Canada, put it more pointedly:

“2 deported, (at least) 698 more to go.”
