The Rosh Hashanah Apple Lineup: 3 Worth Trying

Rosh Hashanah shopping means apples. Lots of apples.

And somehow, what used to be a choice between red, green, and maybe McIntosh has turned into an entire produce section of options.

Honeycrisp. Gala. Fuji. Ambrosia. Pink Lady. Cosmic Crisp. Granny Smith.

They all look good. They are definitely not all the same.

So we narrowed it down to our three personal favorites.

🍎 Honeycrisp

There’s a reason Honeycrisp is so popular.

It’s crisp, juicy and sweet, with just enough tartness that it doesn’t become too much once you add honey. And it has that really good crunch you want when you bite into a fresh apple.

For a Rosh Hashanah table, it’s hard to go wrong with this one.

🍎 Cosmic Crisp

If you keep seeing Cosmic Crisp at the store and wondering what exactly it is, here’s the scoop.

It’s a newer apple variety, a cross between Honeycrisp and Enterprise. The little light speckles against its dark red skin are what gave it the “Cosmic” name.

It’s very crisp, juicy, sweet with a little tartness, and known for keeping its texture particularly well in storage.

Basically, if you like Honeycrisp but want to try something a little different, grab one.

🍏 Granny Smith

And then there’s good old Granny Smith.

Bright green, very crunchy and properly tart.

That tartness actually works really well on Rosh Hashanah, especially when you’re dipping it into very sweet honey. It gives you a completely different bite from the sweeter red varieties.

Plus, if you end up with extras after Yom Tov, they’re excellent for baking.

So which one wins?

We’re not picking.
