International Connections at Pearson Just Got Easier
A new system at Toronto Pearson is making international-to-international connections faster and more straightforward for eligible travellers.
The Canada Border Services Agency has introduced a new Free Flow International-to-International Transit process at Terminal 1.
How does it work?
Previously, some international passengers connecting through Canada had to go through customs during their connection.
Under the new system, eligible travellers can remain in the international transit area and head directly to their connecting flight.
Instead of stopping at a customs kiosk or speaking with a CBSA officer, the airline provides passenger and flight information to the border agency electronically.
Where is it available?
The system is currently available at:
- Toronto Pearson Terminal 1
- Vancouver International Airport
- Montréal-Trudeau International Airport
Who can use it?
The system is designed for travellers arriving in Canada on an international flight and connecting to another international flight.
There are still eligibility requirements. For example, your connecting international flight must depart within 24 hours of your arrival in Canada.
Your airline and itinerary also determine whether you can use the streamlined process.
What does this mean for travellers?
For eligible passengers, it means fewer steps during an international connection.
Instead of:
Arrive → customs → security → connecting gate
the process can be closer to:
Arrive → international transit → connecting gate
That can save time, particularly for passengers with tight connections.
What about baggage?
The new system does not automatically mean that every passenger's luggage will be transferred through.
Baggage arrangements depend on your airline, itinerary and ticket. It's still important to confirm with your airline whether your bags will be checked through to your final destination.
One important thing to remember
This is for international connections, not passengers simply departing Toronto on an international flight.
If Pearson is your starting airport, this new process does not change your normal departure experience.
For travellers who are arriving at Pearson from another country and connecting onward internationally, however, it could make the airport considerably easier to navigate.
The CBSA says the initiative is part of an effort to make international connections more efficient while maintaining Canada's border security.
